Theme: His Voice
Date: November 1-3, 2019
Verse: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27
Over the years, I’ve heard countless stories from others about how they have heard God speak to them about a circumstance or moment in their lives. I wanted this too, and, for part of my Christian walk, I struggled in hearing God speak to me. Or, was God speaking and I just wasn’t listening?
Then, I heard the Holy Spirit tell me about all the voices we hear every day and how our lives can often feel like constant noise overwhelming our minds. We hear voices from so many sides, all in an attempt to influence the way we should think, what to do, and how to feel. Who’s right, who’s wrong, who to trust, who to believe or not believe, what should I do, or how should I do it are all questions we’ve likely asked ourselves at some point in our lives. We’re constantly being courted by the enemy and others, all who are trying to convince us to receive and believe their words. We have all this stuff pouring into our ears, and we can sometimes feel we’re all alone trying to sort it out and figure out who to believe. The fact is, we are going to listen to and agree with someone, and, whomever that someone is, that’s who will have the greatest influence and control in our lives.
I feel there are 4 different voices speaking to us at any moment:
The first voice is the voice of the world – It’s all the ways the world competes for your attention, such as: an obsession with social media, TV, news, and media outlets, and, even the influence and opinions of others.
Next is our Own voice – This can be our inner voice and desire for materialistic things, our attitude, sense of entitlement or what we think we deserve. How about our foolishness and pride, moral beliefs, need for belonging, or even our own shame or guilt?
The voice of the Enemy – The voice of lies, misdirection and temptation.
The voice of God – This is, clearly, the most important voice of all, and the only voice that matters. Christ is our standard. He is our model and guiding principal for our lives. God’s voice is the voice of hope and faith, one of truth and love, kindness, of purpose, and grace. His voice gives us clarity, rest and peace.
Discerning the differences in these voices can often be difficult, especially for young men who are still learning and growing in their relationship with Christ. It’s even challenging for us adults. When we’ve trained our ears, mind and heart to hear God’s voice, the enemy won’t be able to sneak deceptions in on us. We can easily recognize a counterfeit and push back in those dark moments.
My heart is to empower and equip young men to have the courage to step forward with confidence and boldness, knowing the Holy Spirit is right by their sides; to spend intimate time with God, read His word, pray, and seek His will for purpose and direction in their lives; to hear, know and listen intentionally for the “still, small voice” of the Lord, in the same way we know the voice of our mother or father when they speak.
This is what has led me to the vision and theme given by God for Vida Nueva Young Men’s weekend #33: His Voice.
Jesus said in John 10:27 – “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” The will serve as the scripture verse for this vision.
So, SAVE THE DATE! November 1-3, 2019. I’m looking forward to seeing what God reveals to us all in the journey ahead and am excited about serving the Lord with you.
